Learn Avalanche Safety

Backcountry Access (BCA) is North America’s leading manufacturer of snow safety equipment, including Tracker transceivers, Float airbags, shovels, probes, and BC Link radios. BCA’s mission is to save lives, not just sell products. BCA has always considered education to be just as important as the gear it makes. That’s why BCA supports avalanche education programs and forecast centers--and why the company backs up all its products with consumer education and knowledgeable customer service.

  • #sendandreturn: Mike Alkaitis, Gore Range, CO

Can a #sendandreturn adventure be memorable and an amazing experience? BCA ambassador Mike Alkaitis finds that sometimes puts expectations on certain outings – that need to be changed.

The day came to ski the Gore Trifecta, a physical all day trek up and down three challenging couloirs: the Silver Couloir on Buffalo, the Big Bad Wolf on Red #1, and What Big Eyes You Have on Little Red. He enlisted two friends to come along Sven and Karl. Mike, Sven and Karl all agreed that at any time any one of them could pull the plug on the outing if it felt unsafe.

After bagging two couloirs, and ascending up to the third, Sven was not feeling well. He said he was light headed and had almost fallen over backwards on the steeper part of the skin track and boot pack.

They discussed our options: go over and ski the What Big Eyes Couloir as planned, or opt to descend the normal ascent/skin line for What Big Eyes You Have?
