Backcountry Gear Review: New Stash Packs and Shaxe Tech Shovel/Ice Axe

Alex Hunt shows off Backcountry Access’s updated line of Stash backcountry backpacks and the innovative new Shaxe Tech Shovel/Ice Axe system in this backcountry gear review.

Here’s what Alex had to say about the new line of backcountry Stash packs and Shaxe Tech Shovel/Ice Axe tools.

Checking out the new line of Stash backpacks from Backcountry Access, totally redesigned for the 16-17 winter season. The new Stash pack series features updated carry systems for ice axes, skis and snowboards and a refined back panel access system. BCA has a 20 liter, a 30 liter and a full size 40 liter size packs. The Stash has basically everything you need in a back pack, totally set up. You can see the packs hold an ice axe and have exterior straps that pop out really easily to hold a snowboard or a pair of skis. A back panel access zipper at the side by the shoulder straps allows you to get inside from the rear of the pack. The front side of the Stash packs have google pockets, dedicated tool pockets, and stowable helmet hammock – you can configure them in multiple ways for all your backcountry needs.

BCA has also introduced the new Shaxe Tech avalanche shovel, whose handle doubles as an ice axe once the axe head is attached to the top of the shovel handle. You just pop off the shovel head, switch out the handle for its steel ice tool, and it’s really looking good for some vertical climbing, overhead swinging, and getting you up for those steep and deep missions. Includes a nice grip tape feature on the shaft for the hold you need to get you up safely — and your skis will get you down.
