Beacon Checkers

BCA’s original European Beacon Training Park site is at Zinken, Austria, near Salzburg.

Felix Camire, BCA Tech Rep in Alberta, Canada, shows a beacon training park user how to search for a buried transmitter at the Mt. Norquay training park.

Will Barrett and Jeff Ferragi of Breckenridge (CO) Ski Patrol set up the BCA Beacon Training Park for the day at the top of Peak 8. Thanks to lots of practice (and the right beacon), Ferragi is four-time winner of the Colorado Beacon Bowl, an annual transceiver competition at nearby Arapahoe Basin.

You're never too young to learn how to use a transceiver. Make sure everyone in your party is familiar with their equipment. Milos Just in the Czech Republic teaches beacon users how to conduct a signal search. Photo courtesy of David Beckovsky/U100.

Backcountry Access Beacon Training Parks

Backcountry Access Beacon Training Parks (BTPs) are training systems created to make it easier for recreationists and pros to practice with their transceivers. It features 4-8 permanently buried transmitters wired to a central control panel. To change the scenario, just flick the on/off switches on the control panel. Instead of digging holes and reburying beacons all day, you spend your valuable time actually practicing with your transceiver.

See the list below to find a Beacon Training Park near you.
